Why convert to a metered supply?
Jersey Water believes that the fairest way of charging for water is by
meter and, in order to encourage customers to change over to a meter,
will fit one to an existing supply free of charge wherever possible. Metering
encourages consumers to become more aware of the water they consume and
can help in identifying leaks in the system. These factors contribute
to reducing the overall demand for water and making the system more efficient,
which in turn helps the Company to keep water bills as low as possible.
Consumers may also benefit directly by installing a water
meter. Generally, if any of the following apply you might be able to reduce
your water bill by paying for water on a metered basis:
-
You live alone
-
Your household does not consume much water
-
The occupancy levels of your property are much lower
than its capacity (eg two people living in a 4 bedroom house)
-
Your property is regularly left empty for extended
periods of time
-
The rateable value of your property is high
How much will I pay?
The amount you pay will depend on the quantity of water you use. As of
1st April 2008 the unit cost of water is £2.27 per 1000 litres (approximately
220 gallons). In addition, all customers pay a standing charge of £5
per quarter. Charges for water are reviewed annually.
Use the table below to see what your quarterly
water bill might be if you install a meter. The amounts assume an average
consumption of 150 litres of water per person per day (as estimated by
the UK Water industry regulator - OFWAT).

Where will the meter be located?
Your water meter will be fitted in a meter chamber which is usually located
outside in the road or on the pavement. This chamber forms the boundary
between the service pipe, owned and maintained by the Company, and the
supply pipe which is owned and maintained
by the property owner. In certain circumstances (e.g. flats or buildings
with shared supplies) the plumbing arrangements of a building may prevent
us from installing a meter or may require the customer to undertake changes
to internal plumbing arrangements prior to the installation of a meter.
Cost of installing the meter
The Company will install a meter in your property free of charge where
it is possible to do so. Unfortunately there are some properties, which
cannot be metered either due to the location of the service, or due to
the service being shared by more than one customer.
Reading the meter
One of our meter readers will read your meter approximately every three
months. You will be billed for the volume of water (in cubic metres) shown
as consumed between the current and previous meter reading.
Occasionally, it may not be possible to
read your meter and we will estimate your consumption based on your past
usage levels.
